The results produced by the resolution were noted by James Warren in a letter to Samuel Adams: “Three millions of people on their knees at once, supplicating the aid of Heaven, is a striking circumstance, and a very singular one in America. May the blessings of Heaven follow in answer to our prayers.” 17

Samuel Adams’s faith in God was tried and tested by the events of war. Not all the news was as good as that from Ticonderoga. From Boston came the sad word that Dr. Joseph Warren had been killed by the British in the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775. John Adams wrote to James Warren that when initial news of the clash arrived at Philadelphia, it was 11 P.M. on Saturday night, June 24. The two Adamses and Hancock went out into the streets of Philadelphia to rouse the city’s leading men, “in order to beg some powder.” Before morning, ninety quarter-casks of gunpowder were on their way from Philadelphia to Boston. 18

Samuel Adams’s letter to his wife, Elizabeth, offers a window into how he reacted, and evidence that for him, faith was not only a matter for congressional proclamations, but a personal source of strength. Samuel Adams wrote his “dearest Betsy” from Philadelphia late at night. “I pray God to cover the heads of our Countrymen in every day of Battle, and ever to protect you from Injury in these distracted Times. The Death of our truly amiable and worthy Friend Dr Warren is greatly afflicting,” he wrote. “But it is our Duty to submit to the Dispensations of Heaven, ‘Whose Ways are ever gracious, ever just.’ He fell in the glorious Struggle for the publick Liberty.” 19

Warren’s wife had died in 1773, and Adams did what he could to help take care of the four children, all younger than thirteen, who had been left orphaned by the death of their father on the battlefield. 20
